Boilerhouse Gallery
Sandyhill Lane
Corfe Castle
BH20 5JF
Tel: 01929 481073
A small, co-operative gallery in a workshop setting showing the work of Purbeck artists with much of the work produced on site. Pottery, driftwood furniture, limewash, paintings, clocks, polished stone plates, sea-glass jewellery, bird wood carvings, glass and photography. Opposite the steam railway station within view of the castle.
Visitors to the Boilerhouse Gallery will often hear the sounds of stone being chipped away next-door or the train as it puffs into the station. This is no intimidating High Street Gallery and visitors are welcomed in with muddy boots after their country walks. Often the pots are hot from the kiln next-door or the sea-glass in the jewellery was lying on the beach the week before.
Much of the work has a strong Purbeck flavour. There are clocks and furniture made from driftwood from local beaches, carved wooden birds and glass design featuring the ammonites found locally. Aspects of the photography focus in on the detail of the coastal environment, and the paintings are expressions of the artists’ interpretation of Purbeck.
The ruin of Corfe Castle itself is a major attraction for all the family. There is also much to see and do in the village itself, a model village, a traditional village bakery, several pubs and tea-rooms.
There are many good walks locally. The workshops lie at the foot of East Hill which is the start of a panoramic walk along the ridge to Swanage with stunning views over Poole Harbour. Visitors can take the easier option of returning on the steam train to save their legs.
