A beautiful church which has the extremely rare distinction of housing the relics of its Saxon Patron Saint, St Wite or Candida.
St Candida and Holy Cross Church at Whitchurch Canonicorum dates from 890AD and is the only church in England (apart from Westminster) still to house the relics of its Patron Saint, St Wite or Candida within the church. The Shrine is probably the only pre-Reformation shrine to have survived intact.
St Wite or Wita was a martyr who died at the time of the Viking invasions and was renowned fro her healing powers. Through her the church became a great centre for pilgrimages, once second only to Canterbury.
Leaflets are available at the Tourist Offices or from the Church Warden.
