DCRS is a not-for-profit training centre specialising in sustainable and traditional building courses, rural skills and art classes with facilities to hire.
DCRS, Dorset Centre for Rural Skills, is an established not-for-profit training centre based in the beautiful North Dorset countryside. The programme of courses and events cover sustainable and traditional building techniques such as straw bale building and lime; rural skills including hedge laying and hurdle making; and arts and crafts ranging from life drawing to textile dyeing.
Courses are held at DCRS in their extensive facilities which include a lecture hall, indoor working area, pottery studio, blacksmith’s workshop and glassblowing studio. All courses are run in smaller groups to ensure quality ‘hands –on’ tuition. These facilities are also available to hire.
A full programme of courses including dates and costs is available on their website, http://www.dorsetruralskills.co.uk or contact DCRS for a copy to be sent by post.

Directions
Driving north on the A350 through the village of Iwerne Minster, take the left turning signed to Child Okeford. Take the first turning right (about 1/2 mile on) and then you come to a t-junction. Turn left and at the next t-junction DCRS will be on your right. (A map is on the website, http://www.dorsetruralskills.co.uk).
Additional Information
SBRC, the Sustainable Building Resource Centre, is also based at DCRS and provides a one-stop shop for information, advice and sustainable buildings products. The SBRC is housed inside a timber framed, straw bale in-filled house on car tyre foundations and is a wonderful example about what sustainable building means in practice.
Products always in stock include lime putty, hydraulic lime, ready mixed lime and lime pigment.
Natural insulation is availble to order from recycled paper to sheep's wool. The SBRC is the Dorset distributor of Thermafleece.
100% natural paints and wood treatments are also availble to order.
The SBRC can also provide independent advice and recommend reputable suppliers and installers of renewable energy systems for water, heat and electricity generation and saving.
The Centre is open daily between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday (Saturdays and evenings by appointment only).
