Paintings on canvas evoking the colours and culture of India, Morocco and Greece and Dorset paintings concerned with layers of time in the Jurassic coast.
Since his first trip to India in 1993, Gerry has been producing atmospheric paintings on canvas which strive to evoke the spirit of places he has visited. These works allude to elements of the culture within an abstracted landscape space, and the colour which informs each work is often inspired by textiles or ceramics.
After India came Morocco and then more recently the blues of the Aegean sea, which Gerry has been researching through snorkelling off the coast of Dodecanese islands. When focusing on Dorset, he concentrates on the layers of time to be found in the Jurassic rocks of the coast, and likes to contrast this with the traces of man-made occupation visible in the landscape. In this context, the colour derives both from the saturated greens of West Dorset’s pastures and from the hotter reds and oranges in the iron-rich limestone rocks.
