The site of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s headquarters in the River Cerne valley just north of Dorchester includes a wildflower meadow, pond, orchard and picnic area.
Chalk grassland (1.4 ha), enclosed by a carefully planted hedgerow has been developed as a hay-meadow and is now colonised by typical Dorset down-land flowers such as cowslip, yellow rattle and kidney vetch, with thyme on shallow soil “lynchets”. In summer butterflies frequent the field and damsel & dragon flies the pond.
Visit at any time of year, a visitor centre is open during normal working hours. Spring and summer are the best times for wildlife, but unexpected bird species can visit at any time, particularly during migration.
