Kilwood Coppice and Meadows - Dorset Wildlife Trust Reserve
Dorset Wildlife Trust
BH20 5NT
Tel: 01305 264620
This Dorset Wildlife Trust reserve consists of a birch and oak woodland that has regenerated naturally since the 1970s, acid grassland and ponds.
The reserve (9.0 ha) was once an area of clay mining, dating back to Roman times; there are a number of deep ponds and some grassland. Dormice and deer live in the woods along with typical woodland birds and less commonly seen woodcock, goldcrest and marsh tit. Flower species are varied with moschatel in the woods, yellow iris amongst the reeds and heath spotted orchids and devil's-bit scabious in the grassland. Numerous insect species thrive, such as meadow & field grasshoppers, along with speckled wood, painted lady and small copper butterflies. Fifteen species of dragonfly have been recorded around the ponds.
The best times to visit are in spring and summer

Directions
Turn off the A351 at the roundabout at Stoborough Green; take the road to the Blue Pool; the reserve entrance is on the left just after the turning to East Creech, on the opposite side of the road.
(O.S. reference: SY 933 825).
Additional Information
