Founded in 1974, Dorset Opera’s raison d’être is to introduce the joys of opera to all – especially the young. Dorset Opera is world’s foremost residential opera summer school
It takes the form of an intensive residential summer school in the glorious setting of Bryanston School, Blandford Forum. It is almost unique in the UK in the way in which it brings together experienced and often internationally professionals – director, conductor, soloists, music staff and orchestra – to work with an amateur chorus and stage crew.
Participating singers spend two weeks learning and rehearsing the opera, while technical students prepare sets and props. Costumes are individually created for principals and choristers alike. Two or more fully-staged performances of the highest calibre and in the original language, are then given before a paying audience. Opportunities exist for chorus members (SATB), stage management, stage crew, scenery constructors, painters, lighting designers and technicians.
Many students who have appeared with Dorset Opera over the years have gone on to enjoy successful careers in music, technical theatre and television.
