Close to the River Frome which flows through the southern part of Wareham is the old 12th century parish church of Lady St Mary.
Although of Saxon origin this church was largely rebuilt in 1841-1842. The impressive 14th centruy chancel and remarkable contents including fine pre-conquest inscriptions, a 12th century lead font and two 13th century effigies. Here can be found the grave and memorial to the Rev John Hutchins whose 'History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset' (1774) was a pioneering work of history to which we are all indebted
