Considered by some to be Dorset's finest church and a landmark from outside the town. Built of local Sherborne stone with Ham Hill stone dressings.
The visible structure is largely of the 12th and 15th centuries with a saxon door in the west wall of the north aisle. Internally the superb fan vaults are the earliest examples in the country of wide span fan vaulting.
Monuments include two Purbeck marble effigies of 12th and 13th century abbots.
There is also a superb baroque monument of 1698 by John Nost to John Digby, Earl of Bristol. The Abbey precincts including the Abbots lodging of the 12th century, now within Sherborne School are a scheduled ancient monument.
