Slow Food Dorset is part of the international Slow Food movement founded in Italy in 1989 to counteract the globalisation of food and disappearance of local food traditions.
Slow Food has more than 83,000 members in 107 countries around the world. The movement is founded on the belief that we have a right to derive pleasure from our food and a responsibility to protect its heritage, the traditions and cultures that depend upon it. Slow Food celebrates and promotes food that is Good, Clean and Fair – it tastes good, it is cleanly produced without harm to the environment, and its producers are fairly compensated.
Slow Food Dorset is one of 40 local groups (called convivia) that form the backbone of the movement and are managed by volunteers. Through the convivia, members meet at events around the county to share the everyday joys that food can offer. The events include visits to farms and food producers, taste workshops, fungi and seashore forays, and dinners using traditional products and dishes from around the world.
